How to Shorten Your Belt

Five minutes, no tools beyond scissors. Read to the end before you cut.

1. Wear it first

Thread the strap through the buckle and put the belt on over the trousers you will actually wear it with. Adjust until it sits the way you want it.

2. Mark the cut

Look at the tail hanging past the buckle. You want roughly four to five inches of strap left beyond the buckle once it is fastened. That tail is what you hold to tighten, and it tucks into the first loop.

Mark the strap where you intend to cut, on the underside, with a pencil or a piece of tape.

3. Release the buckle

Lift the lever on the underside of the buckle and slide the strap all the way out. The buckle comes off completely. It does not need to be unscrewed.

4. Cut

Cut straight across at your mark, using sharp scissors or a craft knife against a straight edge. One clean pass is better than several small cuts.

5. Reattach

Feed the cut end back into the buckle, tracked side facing in, and push it through until it catches. Put the belt on and check the tail length.
